In this post, we will learn how to prepare for our situational writing, using the choice of “Creating a World Record Event”, with a PRC table. PRC actually stands for Point – Reason – Creative Idea (but People’s Republic of China sure helps in the acronym mnemonic!), and it’s a safe way for students to learn how to elaborate content in their situational writing question.
Point (P): What?
From the previous post’s homework, you should have prepared your points. How many points should one prepare? It’s up to you. Because the O level question may be put in paragraphs instead of a list, you ought to break it up into points to read it more carefully.
Here is how I organised the points :
P
- class week’s vacation in December
- choice you made is the best.
- Imagine our names as part of a world record!
- We must organise an amazing event
- that includes students from other classes
- in a bid to win
- open our eyes to the challenges needed for this task
- they should vote for your choice
How many points did you have? Did you join some points together? It is perfectly all right to do so, unless it makes your points difficult to understand.
Did you see that I included the points that were not included in the list of options, but before and after? Students who prepare their PRC tables need to be careful not to leave out important points that can be found elsewhere. They should read the entire question properly.

Reason (R) : Why?
The next step is to come up with a reason for each point. We do this to give some substance in our role play. Remember that your audience is your class, and your job is to persuade them to choose your option. Therefore, having a reason for each point will help you think clearly as to why this choice is the most suitable.

Creative Idea (C) : How?
Creative Idea refers how you carry out plan. While R helps you to build a case for your option, C expresses your option in practical steps that are interesting. Here’s an example :
As a P, your “class week’s vacation in December” doesn’t stand out. You ought to express it clearly i.e., which week in December? Be specific. Therefore your C could be “the second week of December, so that we can carry out the challenge and still have time to rest for Christmas”. Isn’t that clearer?

You will see from your completed table that you have created a substantial and elaborative plan for your essay. Well done! If you’ve never worked this hard for a situational writing work before, reflect just how much thought should be given to one essay.

Question :
Within 30 – 40 minutes, write the speech, with reference to language features that we have spoken about. Email your English teacher the writing, or hand in the handwritten assignment in class the next lesson.
